The first Memorial Day was to commemorate all of the fallen in the American Civil War. At that time it was called Decoration Day. In the mid 20th Century the day evolved to include the fallen in all wars - and indeed, since then, there have been way too many to count.
Because so many, many died in the Civil War, some 600,000 plus, the women who served decorated the graves of their fallen men, Hence the name "Decoration Day."
There are still Decoration Days with families, individual families, usually in the deeper south. People get together and pay their respects to their ancestors who fought in the civil war. And though there is a solemn experience to it, the gatherings are said to be fun and interesting.
